Super evocative idea! Only one thought comes to mind... how would you rule a more direct and inmediate use of magic (in the case you don't want to limit magic only to it's effects happening out of scene)?
I think something like an attacker approaching a magician and the last one throwing some kind of salt that blinds them permanently or giving a cold look that freezes those with impure thoughts could work, an inbetween point between "realistic" or explicable uses of components or actions and paranormal or supernatural effects produced by them.
Very cool. I never liked magic as superpowers with no inherent or narrative cost
